The story of the Tichborne Dole begins in 1150, during the reign of Henry II. Lady Mabella, the wife of the miserly and cruel Sir Roger Tichborne, begged her husband to fulfill her dying wish. She warned that Tichborne and his heirs would suffer dire consequences if her request was not carried out each year on Lady Day, March 24.
